Testing Process

Employment Application

Your process will begin by submitting a complete employment application online when an application period is open. If your application is incomplete, it will not be accepted. Submitting an application does not guarantee an invitation to test. Applications are screened and reviewed to determine best candidates to invite. These candidates are sent information for supplemental information packet to fill out and bring with them for the testing process.

Written Examinations

The pre-employment written examination will measure cognitive abilities that are necessary for effective performance as a Firefighter/EMT. Applicants must score a minimum of 60% on this exam to move forward in the testing process.

Interview

Candidates who successfully complete the written examination will be scheduled for an oral interview assessment (normally the same day or day after). This interview will be conducted by a panel of current North Myrtle Beach Fire Department employees. Applicants must score a minimum of 70% on this assessment to move forward in the testing process.

Physical Ability Testing (PAT)

Candidates must successfully complete the Physical Ability Test. More information about this test can be found here: Fire Agility Testing

Final Scoring of Applicant

Scores received from all elements of testing are calculated to give each candidate a final overall ranking. Candidates who have an overall score of 70% or higher are placed on the Eligibility list for that application period which remains open until available slots have been filled or one year, whichever comes first.

Candidates considered for hire will receive an contingent offer of employment pending results of background investigation and medical clearance.

Background Investigation

A thorough background investigation is conducted on hiring candidates to review information obtained from but not limited to:

  • Social Media check
  • Criminal history check
  • Public records Check
  • Driving Record
  • Reference Checks (Personal and Employer)

Medical & Psychological Evaluations

All candidates must pass a medical physical and psychological evaluation before final offer of employment is made.
