[ARCHIVED] Arbor Day Celebration was a Success!

Arbor Day 2021 - Reduced

ARBOR DAY CELEBRATION IN NORTH MYRTLE BEACH
An Arbor Day celebration was held outside at the North Myrtle Beach City Hall today (December 3). Those in attendance helped plant a young Elm Tree.

Tree City Board Member Merideth Smith presided over the event and provided the benediction. She is also a member of the Driftwood Garden Club

The welcome was provided by Emily Tinsley of the Tree City Board and the Sea Oats Garden Club.

Mayor Marilyn Hatley spoke about the value of trees to the community and the many ways in which the City, the garden clubs, the Tree City Board, and members of the community work together to plant and preserve trees throughout the year.  She also recalled her love of trees as a child. She would climb her mother's large magnolia tree to the very top and enjoy the great views it offered of what was then to her "the whole world." She said it was always a challenge for her mother to convince her to come down for lunch. The Mayor said that as she grew older, she taught younger members of her family to climb the same tree and enjoy the same views, sparking their young imaginations.

Arbor Day Chairperson Mary Templeton provided a history of Arbor Day. She is also a member of the Yaupon Garden Club.

A presentation of trees was made by Jeanette Lyon, Chairperson of the North Myrtle Beach Tree City Board; Jeanette Bell, Driftwood

Garden Club Arbor Day Chairperson; Emily Tinsley, President of the Sea Oats Garden Club; and Mary Templeton, Yaupon Graden Club Arbor Day Chairperson.

We thank everyone for making this an interesting, fun, and memorable event!
